what type hair do you have? Do you go to a professional hair dresser? I think thats quite key and also using right products and being consistent with when you treat hair etc. Check out black hair magazines for some of the big stylists and find out what they would recommend

hey, I love all your hair contributions. I wish I could come to your salon in Florida but I am all the way in england. I have recently bought some Vidal Sassoon Hair Hydration Moisture Protection Steam Rollers, can you tell me if these are any good in maintaining relaxed hair without using flat irons so much?
Thanks and please keep up the fab work you do!!

hey jack470, your right i’ve been in the hair business for 25 years, and guess what most people don’t understand that no lye is a big marketing lie and it can be just as bad .but a lot of new hair stylist don’t even know that it’s just a change of words for you to keep spending money.

If I straighten my hair, dyed it blonde, and avoided the sun for 12 months, I still wouldn’t pass for white. So, why do people think we perm to look white? Do white people sun tan to look black? Okay, this is stupid. What if when God returns, he is sporting an Afro. And he’ll say: Jesus, round up my chosen ones. You’ll be able to tell by their hair texture. Do you know only certain African tribes have hair like ours? Other Africans had straight hair. God made us this way for a reason.

  • h20vir says:

I grew my relaxer out as well. Now, it has grown passed my shoulders to around mid back. I don’t know how to braid. It would dread up when I wore it down, and I got tired of wearing it up in a bun. Therefore, I had to relax my hair. I will grow it out again if someone could teach me how to manage and style long, thick natural hair.

Her hair is nice and healthy!

  • SweetAdvice says:

True but there is a diffence between lye and no lye. Lye can burn out your scalp and leave you bald. No lye is gentler on the scalp but harsh on the hair. You need a metal cleansing shampoo after neutralizing. Lye can make your hair straighter than no lye. But lye can damage your scalp.

  • Jack470 says:

No lye is just as bad as lye. Instead of sodium hydroxide, they use potassium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, or a blend of chemicals – which work exactly the same way – and can burn and do the same damage. Because those chemicals are not called lye – they can market them as ‘no lye’. In truth, they can do just as much harm

  • nyjalove says:

    yea yes you no

  • HorrorBuffy says:

You are very well informed about your hair which is great. I wish all sistas were. I want to write a book about healthy black hair in the near future. Well, maybe sooner than that lol. Keep that knowledge flowing!

  • HorrorBuffy says:

No, I’m not rastafarian :-D . I have 100% natural waist length hair. No locs or dreads. I’ve spent many years doing research on our hair and realized it’s possible to grow black hair long and healthy without chemicals. It takes a lot of patience but it’s worth it. I wash my hair once every 3 weeks and leave a homemade conditioner with oils on my hair for approximately 3 hours without heat. 95% of the time, I wear my own hair in braids, twists or an updo. Combing is very minimal, yet possible.

  • SweetAdvice says:

I know you must be Rastafarian. Because combing black hair does major damage to it. Relaxers chemicals breaks the sulfur bond in your hair. The cuticle is lifted to do this. The more alkali the relaxers the more lift. You wash the chemicals out with special shampoos. if chemicals were still in your hair it would fall out.

  • HorrorBuffy says:

Every woman should look good with their natural hair, it’s yours. I’ve been using the same lame ass excuses myself until I went natural in 1995 and i’m so glad I did. My hair is waist length, very thick, healthy and still growing. To think, if I was still relaxing today, I would have had weak hair. Even though my hair was very long with an relaxer, it wasn’t this long or healthy. It is impossible to have healthy hair when you have a chemical in it. Long hair is not healthy hair!

  • SweetAdvice says:

Also to all mi sistas out there natural or relaxed. When you buy your comb check the edges. Do not know if you have noticed some combs feel like razor at the edges. Not good for our hair.

  • SweetAdvice says:

If you want to grow you hair if you are African American. Do not over comb or brush out your hair. Our hair grows best left alone. The day your hair is relaxed do not comb it wait three days or so them gently comb. Rastas have long hair because they do not comb their hair.

  • SweetAdvice says:

You are right because basically most hair care products have some risk. Relaxing if done right is safe but you have to base and rinse it all out right. No lye is really the best for home use because you only have to worry about some metal residue left back that can easily be removed with a Chelating Shampoo. After rinsing with a neutralizing shampoo.

I mix my no lye with egg yoke, MSM and 1/2 a cup of seseme oil. I get good results but it is me. Everyone is different.
