It depends on the woman, but many don’t. Our hair doesn’t get oily like straight hair does; on the contrary, it’s so naturally dry that we frequently put oils on it trying to compensate. I wash once a week.

Is it true that african american women dont wash there hair everyday?

  • mwedzi says:

thanks!. Mwedzi means “moon” or “month” in Shona, spoken in Zimbabwe. I’m black American, but studied there for a semester in undergrad.

  • Oyin26 says:

hey i love you channel what does mwedzi mean, where do you trace your cultural origins?

  • mwedzi says:

Thanks. Usually “natural hair” means afro-textured hair that does not have a chemical relaxer in it. When it comes to styling, when people say “natural styles”, they usually mean on hair that is neither chemically straightened nor heat straightened (flat ironed, pressed).

pardon my ignorance sistas…when yous talk of natural hair ,are referring to curled-up un-straightened hair ?…being male i “don’t know”much apart from Afro & locki…interesting vid though

  • Blessed2983 says:

Thanks so much for this. I just bought these curlers today and I will try them out tonight.

  • mwedzi says:

Did I ever reply to this? I wash my hair at least once a week. Maybe once every 4-5 when the weather’s hotter.

  • mwedzi says:

At that time it was around 10-11 inches stretched.

  • mwedzi says:

Nope, I never did a big chop.

  • ilove2sing23 says:

Do you have a video of your big choP?

  • Sisimaria2207 says:

Thanks! Where did you go to find out information about your hair. I’m natural and plan on staying that way. I currently have braids in my hair but want a change.

  • mwedzi says:

I’ve been natural most of my life, all except a few years in my teens. I just started trying to learn about my hair in 07.

  • Sisimaria2207 says:

How long have you been natural

  • mwedzi says:

Wow, that’s a real compliment. Thank you so much.

    I’m afraid of stylists.

  • mwedzi says:

sorry to hear that. what exactly do you think is going wrong? i mean, what help do you need?

  • angelslight7 says:

H, great vid,\ I have a hard time making the bun in my hair it does not come out as nice as yours : ( need a little help)

  • geojam11 says:

Thanks for the tips. I have recently been doing it myself. People who say they specialize in natural hair in Tampa really don’t. Following tips like yours has jump started my hair to growing. Now I have healthy big fro that I can put in various styles.

  • thethingkid says:

DAMN LOOK AT THIS!! This makes me so happy seeing sistas with enough courage AND pride to post a video that isn’t about relaxing hair and all that other garbage.
Thank you for this so much. With all of these other videos I know little girls of color would think that perming and other destructive chemicals are the only way to go. Thank you for showing that that’s not the case.
    Much love sis.

  • tubing08w says:

And i wash 2x a week. It differs from one woman to the other.

  • ananama1 says:

we don’t need too. white women or white people have to wash their hair everyday because their hair is oily and attract lice….
